Reviews

Men’s Ankeny™ Mid Boot is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 66.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great boot for slush and mud Love these boots, I have had them about a year and have been really happy with them. I would not consider them a winter boot though, they are not insulated that much like some of the other reviews have mentioned. But I have actual insulated boots for when it gets down into the single digits. where these boots really shine is in the slush, rain and mud. Great grip and completely water proof. I actually like that they are not that insulated so I can still wear them in the summer when it is wet and muddy. cant beat these boots for any wet conditions and especially when its slushy.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sorel Ankeny-- style, comfort and practicality! I got these boots for Xmas and have worn them almost everyday since as we've had frigid temperatures and lots of snow here in the northeast. I got these boots specifically for style as most waterproof winter boots are ugly clodhoppers intended for a snowmobile, but these boots are lower profile but also durable and practical. The leather upper is durable and the and sole grips the ice nicely. While the boot fits true to size, I have 2 minor complaints-- first, the toe box is larger than needed as I still have plenty of room even with the thickest sock and because the toe box is bigger, my feet got colder faster than in other boots (maybe it was the negative temps?). So after a few weeks and several wears, I am more than satisfied.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice boot but won’t stay tied Boots are great but laces are worthless as they won’t stay tied. First day I wore them I kept tripping over laces that won’t stay tied!!! I am thinking about returning them to the manufacturer.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great boot for rainy fall I was counting on this boot to be much warmer. It turned out to be lighter than I expected. I am from Kazakhstan, but studying in Houston, TX. Took it back to Kazakhstan in the winter and made a mistake. Now, enjoying it in the Texas winter.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Wear for the worse In my second season of mild suburbia yard work the quick hook lace restraint as well as another lace restraint broke off, ripping out of the leather. Poor leather quality allowed the rivotted hook and rivotted lace restraint to tear through. Too bad as the boots are extremely comfortable and look great. Another defect is with the mastic or adhesive on the rubber toe cap slowly coming apart at the edges/sides during first year of use. My wife and I own multiple pairs of Sorels and these just don't make the cut. Was looking for a less bulky snow boot to my Sorel Conquest (2nd pair) of which my first pair lasted over 10 years! Very disappointed in the Mid Ankeny as an every day, fall/winter/spring melt, durable, waterproof, multi purpose boot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My 3rd pair And won’t be my last. Really is the best boot I’ve ever had. A little care and they will hold up for a long time in light rain and snow. I like them because it’s a comfortable work boot that has enough style to get me to a business lunch as well as put up with the hard walking of City life.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good...but not Sorel First and foremost, I love and believe in Sorel products. This particular boot just didn't live up. Within no time, the rubber top cap separated from the shoe at the sides, which allows water in. So waterproof they are not (at least not for long). Second, due to the quick-lace hooks, they are always coming untied. You have to ties them tight to keep this from happening...and because of needing to pull them through the quick-lace hooks so hard, they break through laces right and left. As far as comfort, they are as good as Sorel usually is...it's just the fine-details that aren't up to par for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect I usually do not wear boots as the fit can be difficult. these boots are perfect. I have just purchased my 2nd pair. I currently have the green and get lots of compliments on them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great quality I bought these for my husband and surprised him. He LOVES them and I am very very impressed by the quality of the boots. Up close the quality of the design and the materials that make up this boot are even more stunning. The pictures online dont do this boot justice.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great well made shoe This above the ankle boot fits perfectly the first time you where them. They slip right on without spreading or tugging. The best thing is how perfectly the heal fits, and holds it in place without slipping up and down, even when laces are untied. Probably the best boot I have ever had, and I have had many good fitting boots, as a builder, and a Sportsman?

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Defective Rubber toe cap separated from leather upper and then stitching separated after only a month of wear. Wore them daily and were really my favorite shoe/boot for everyday wear. Noticed other reviews ab out similar defect.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome! I saw these boots in Lord and Taylor's on my way to another shoe store looking for some boots and tried these on and feel in love with them. Came home and bought them right then. Have been wearing them everyday it's rained since I got them and they hold true to the statement of being waterproof.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Boots I bought these boots last year for my husband, he works outside and walks all day long as a delivery man. These boots are warm and weatherproof throughout the long and cold Chicago winters. They're stylish and durable for everyday use. My husband loves these boots we bought a second pair this year.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Exactly what I wanted These boots are wonderful! I work in retail and was looking for a boot that I could wear to shovel the driveway and not have to change out of. They're super light and the footbed is comfortable for all day wear, and by all day wear I mean eight hours on my feet. An unexpected, but happy, occurrence are all the compliments I've gotten on them! Everyone who has seen them says how nice they look and asks where I got them. Considering I bought them online without trying them on, I'm quite pleased. I rated them as "fits slightly large" because that's how I like to wear my shoes. Especially when I have to be on my feet for hours in end and they can swell, I haven't had any problems. Highly recommended!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth It I have put these through a full year of abuse with low to no maintenance and I am impressed! From spending days hiking in the rain, walking through mud or snow, these have held up and show little wear. I have been satisfied enough to purchase every color so far.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from These things are SICK I have recently bought these online, and I love them. They are very comfortable and very stylish my friends all want some now. I have gone on a couple of hikes with them and they seem very durable. Ive gone through water and they stay true to what they say. They are waterproof. The only thing that I wish was a little better is, I wish that they had a little more padding on the bottom. They seem very thin

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Boots The boots are awesome they are water proof. Great boots for rain, cold and snow. Good weight and look, you can wear them everywhere. You don't feel like you need to take off your big snow boots when you get somewhere.Comfortable for the whole day including a lot of walking. I would recommend getting a good insole if you are wearing them most of your day.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great All Around Boots I use the Mid Hikers primarily for outdoor work and they perform well. They keep my feet dry and have excellent ankle support. I've also taken to wearing them to sporting events here, where it's park and hike. Very comfortable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Smashing through snow. Been wearing them for 2 weeks, got around 10 inches of snow and running errands is a breeze. Not having to dodge puddles, slush, and snow and not worrying about your feet makes a difference. Toe is wide but desirable for heavy sox and smashing through snow. Aesthetically pleasing, received several compliments. Next up black ones. 2cND pair of Sorel boots in as many years, I'll keep buying them to suit my needs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Durable, good style Super comfortable, so far a good foul weather boot that doesn't look/feel like I am going snowshoeing. Works for me to get from home in the mountains to office, through mud and snow. I love sorel in general for style, fit, and function.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from 3 years and still going strong I love these boots. My first pair were in brown. I just love the style and haven't been able to find any other boots that I've liked as much. The next year I bought them in black to have options. The toe box is a bit wide, which would be my only real complaint. In order to get a good fit I had to add an insole, but once added they have fit me perfectly. I would assume not everyone would have this issue as I just have smaller feet. The leather is beautiful and has aged really well. For the first 2 years they still looked brand new. The sole has barely any wear on it, it has held up nicely. The rubber on the front and back of the boot has not began to fall off on either of my pairs despite a lot of use and some negative reviews from others on this point. Although I do expect he rubber to eventually come loose, but it doesn't bother me because when that day comes, I'll simply use some leather adhesive and adhere the rubber back to its snug position again. This boot is not a perfect boot, due to its large toe box, although I suspect some will appreciate this, but for the price and quality its a fantastic pair of footware to have around.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unmatched comfort & versatility I've worn these boots in the middle of winter across much of Europe & Australia as my only shoes for months on end through deep snow, slush, ice, water, gravel, dirt & concrete. From clubbing in the cities to wandering back country they never have let me down & my feet have always been warm, dry & comfortable. If you want do everything winter boots they're peerless.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Falling apart after a month I have had these for about a month now putting in at most 20 miles of walking. They have been used casually just walking around town. They have never been submerged in water, taken thru mud/snow, or anything extreme and still the rubber around the toes are coming unglued. The seam is located right where the toes bend and any type of walking over time will just increase the damage. I am extremely disappointed and would not recommend for any activity. There's no point in spending +100 dollars on something that won't even hold up to casual life when you could spend a few more dollars on a boot that will last.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Boots lasted a year Boots were great until the warranty expired (1 year) and then the stitching started to fray and the sole became cracked. Will be looking to buy similar boots with a better warranty.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Do Yourself a Favor... ...and buy these. Two key qualities are fashion AND function. These held up well in mild rain and snow in the waning days of winter in MN. That said, I wouldn't recommend wearing them in HEAVY rain or snow. Other qualities that stand out are the ankle support and the overall comfort. Some reviewers complained about the comfort, but hasn't been a problem for me.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good looking boot Good looking boot. True to size, although toe area is a little too spacious. Usually wear size 12 but got these in an 11.5, and they fit good. Overall good looking boot, and hopefully will be durable as well.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from A letdown The boot appeared to be well constructed and was very comfortable. Unfortunately after one season of use, the stitching of the upper failed on both boots. Having this happen on both boots after such limited use left me very disappointed. Clearly not the quality I would expect from Sorel. Of course this occurred shortly after the manufacturer warranty expired.
Date published: 2016-02-21
Rated 2 out of 5 by from poor boot construction The tongue on this boot does not hold its shape and tends to bunch up or fold making them uncomfortable. The the last two lace hooks are too shallow so the laces tend to jump off the hook when tying. Definitely wouldn't hike in them and would not recommend or purchase again.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Boot These fit well, look great and are very light weight. Looking forward to a lot of good use from them. The sizing is a little large, I ordered a 1/2 size smaller than my typical size and they fit just right.
Date published: 2016-02-04
Rated 1 out of 5 by from In no way is this a comfortable, supportive, boot The boot is not supportive at all, the fit is narrow and incredibly small and even though I am a woman I have wide "man width" feet and so I can't fathom why the boot was made so incredibly narrow. Also this boot has NO traction, literally none - I slip in my sneakers less than I slip in these. For the $150. I spent on them it is not worth it and I would not recommend them. And so I am regretting the purchase as I can't return them now that I've worn them, which is the only way I figured out that they were not worth the money at all.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ankeny 14 day Europe trip in December. Cold and rainy every day. These boots were awesome, kept feet dry and warm with only a lightweight Smartwool sock. The best thing was comfort. Walked 20 miles a day in absolute comfort. I own the Carribou as well and that ranked as high

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Look Great but Mildly Functional First the good. They look as good on as they do on the website. I receive plenty of compliments asking where I got them etc. In terms of function I think there are better options. Saying these boots are waterPROOF is a slight stretch of the truth. Wearing these in the rain for 15mins walking to work, my feet still did get damp. In terms of quality, I can already see where the rubber toe "bumper" is in the beginning stages of delaminating.(owned for about a month) but leather looks nice and of quality. Fit wise they are pretty true, the toe box is a little more spacious than I require but probably there to allow space for thicker socks. This boot won't be your bulletproof rain or snow boot but somewhere in-between. They look great but fall short in terms of function for my needs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Boots I was super scared after reading some of the reviews here; I had already ordered the boots and then the reviews here were quiet harsh, especially for a Sorel boot. These are perfect for a work scenario, street wear, probably hiking (untested), and any scenario were you don't need specialty boots (steel toe, etc.). They look and work great with jeans. They are styled very well. They are super comfortable, and get more so as you wear them. The leather is beginning to wear after just a few weeks but I think it will create a nice effect. TBD if they last well; I'll be disappointed if I don't get two good seasons out of them. I thought the big SOREL across the back was going to ruin the boot, but it's actually really subtle, at least as far as a giant brand name on your heel goes.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very uncomfortable pair of boots! These are boots heavy, extremely wide. and they're hurting my heels (I usually don't have problems with shoes) that's why I feel so disappointed. They might be okay if you are a hobbit or if you wear 10 pairs of socks.
Date published: 2015-12-23
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Boot I typically wear a size 11, sometimes an 11.5, these are a perfect fit 11. I bought these to wear in the rain at our typical 30* to 50* winter weather. I've been in Portland downpours and love them enjoying dry, warm, super comfy feet. The fact that I think they look excellent is a total bonus. I bought them in the light brown color.
Date published: 2015-12-18
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not waterproof I purchased one pair because I liked the style, but had to exchange them because both shoes leaked water. Turns out the second pair leaks, too. Very poor quality and false claim of being waterproof. Also, toe seam glue doesn't hold. Rubber pulls away from the leather very quickly and easily. Would not recommend and not what I expected from a Sorel product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good boot, wide toe area I was looking for a boot I could wear to work every day in the winter. -- I work in management at a machine shop but I am frequently on the shop floor. You can wear this boot every day, but the "mid" (ankle) cut is a little too high for me to wear on a daily basis. The construction on them is superb and they fit true to size where length is concerned. However, they are slightly narrow in the heel and they are very roomy in the toe box and wide on the bridge of the foot. I would prefer a slightly snugger fit on the bridge and slightly narrower toe, but these are still very comfortable and the rubber toe is incredibly durable.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Recommended for Casual Hiking At Most I am a wildlife biologist who spends at least 12 hours each day on off-trail, rugged terrain where boots are crucially important. These boots held up to the South African bush for 4 months perfectly, and then quickly deteriorated into an unwearable condition. As noted from other reviewers - both the rubber toe-pads at the end of the boot became unattached, which then allowed the boots to welcome a plethora of dirt, water, mud and insects into the depths of my sole. Various other seams along the sides also became unattached around month 5. However, the traction on these boots is unrivaled for other boots I have tried, and the comfort was incredible until they lost their water resistance. This would be a great casual hiking boot, but I would not recommend it for intensive field work.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Small toe box height I have owned a few SORELs in my day and I was excited by this style of boot. I wear a size 15, medium or D width. This shoe fits as I would expect, with the exception of the toe box height. It's low headroom in there, and for whatever reason, my big toes felt too much pressure, especially when the shoe flexed while walking. I've never had a problem of this nature with a shoe before. I can't speak to the durability of the shoe as I returned them for a refund. I had to rate these as poor because of the fit, but that doesn't seem to be a fair rating because they likely fit for the vast majority of people.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Unbelievably Disapointed I purchased the Ankeny Mens Hiker near the end of February 2015. I purposely waited a bit to write the review so that I could see how the shoes were in spite of other reviews I had read before buying. In my second week of owning, I noticed that the rubber which wraps around the toe of the left shoe began to come away from the shoe. It didn't come all the way off, but it began to come up. Two weeks after, the right shoe began doing the same. Just today, this evening I went to tie my shoes and noticed that the stitching on the left heel is came undone. Now if I had actually used these shoes as hiking boots I might understand how this could be. But I these shoes have never been on a trail, or anything other than concrete and the occasional dirt of walking on grass. This is the second pair of Sorel's I've owned that ended up disappointing me. Wow, April isn't even over yet, and two months of normal wear proved to be too much for the Mens Ankeny Boot. After this, I don't think I will ever purchase another pair of Sorel's again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from wonderful This boot is the ONLY boot my son will wear. It is very easy for me as we have had 2 pairs so far and he wears them every day....summer and winter...they are true to size..have toe room and good for his knees as they have support. They are nice looking as well and durable.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not waterproof Had these for a couple of months when my feet started to get wet. After minimal use, the sole started to separate from the boot allowing water/ice/snow to penetrate. Definitely a poor product. Would not recommend.
Date published: 2015-04-21
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Boot This boot was a little larger in size than I anticipated. The length is good but is larger in the toe area than I would prefer. I think this will help in the winter though for warmth. I could also fix some of the size issue with a sole insert. I have had this boot in the pouring rain and it did great. I barely looked wet. It looks good and I look forward to next winter to really try them out.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from ANKENY MID BOOT - 1 Month Use First off, this is one of the better boots that I've owned. The traction is great, they keep my feet warm in -0º F conditions, and they look great. I live in Western New York, and with the conditions we've had this winter, these boots "so-far" have been a blessing.... Why I'm rating these boots as "fair" and also do not recommend them, is because they need to fix the design. After only a month, my feet started getting wet, even with the "waterproof" construction. I'll explain.. In stride when your heal lifts, but toe stays planted, the boot flexes at the toe box. The targeted area where the boot flexes, is where the vulcanized rubber outsole starts and ends, wrapping around the toe of the boot. The rubber, from normal use (I wear these to work, and walking the dog), is separating from the leather. Now the boot has an entry way for water and dirt to enter the boot. I'm very disappointed with these boots, as my previous pair of Sorel's lasted about 6-7 years of regular use in winter conditions. This has only been a month. Like I said, the boot is overall a nice boot. Although, if one function of the boot fails, the boot all together fails the consumer. Attached is a picture of my foot in the boot, applying slight pressure on the toe. You can see the rubber separating from the leather.. Again, I'm not trying to put down the brand or craftsmanship. My feedback will hopefully aid to re-engineer a solution to this boots flaw.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Slip and Slide boots These boots are the worst I've ever purchased to date. Don't waste your money.. They only provide a bit of traction during compact snow, else, they provide no grip to any surface at all. Also, the strap located in the upper back portion of the shoe, which assist you in slipping on your shoes popped off. I can't stress it enough How bad the soles slip.. Zero traction. these shoes are worth zero dollars
